Who we are

Fikile Sondela is a childhood sexual abuse survivor. She uses her childhood trauma for the betterment of others. On her journey towards healing, she realized that the missing link to overcoming the ordeal was lack of information. In her early 20’s she realized the impact that the psychological trauma had on her. She took a decision to heal and work hard on herself. The first book on sexual abuse which she read was a book that she borrowed from the local library, and has read many self-help books thereafter. Reading played a role in overcoming the ordeal. Impumelelo Wings was founded in February 2019 but the journey started when 25-year-old Fikile started volunteering in local schools, teaching life skills and raising awareness on sexual abuse. Impumelelo Wings was established to close the gaps of lack of information and knowledge for young people. There was a need to open a library for the community of Zenzele informal settlement because the children from there have to walk a distance to access a library in the nearby Mohlakeng location. Fikile’s dream is to see young people fight and end poverty. A library will push young people towards that direction and introduce a culture of reading. In May 2019, Impumelelo Wings received a sponsorship of a 12 meter shipping container from the Caring Women's Forum to start the library in. The Zenzele Impumelelo Library will officially open on the 20th of July 2019. Impumelelo Wings’ goal is to offer support and guidance for young people by: • Offering career counselling to young people • Raising awareness on abuse • Establishing mentorship relationships for young people in their chosen careers • Offering support for victims of sexual abuse • Distributing of sanitary pads, school uniform, matric dance clothes, graduations attire and stationary
